- The Amish most often use retired standard racehorses pull buggies, as they already been trained to pull carts and because of their calm demeanors.

- In Holmes County, the Kuhns are the first Amish family to expand commercial sheep production, using Dorset sheep who can breed year-round. When they purchased their flock in 1996, the Kuhns knew only four other sheep farmers who raised commercial-sized flocks.

- In Middlebury, Indiana, Amish farmers the Lehmans began their farm in 1988 with 60 sows and 16 cows, hand milking their cows until their community allowed milking machines in 1992. Their cattle then increased to 60 cows within the existing barns.
