- There is no point in trying to escape, there is only salt and salt water to eat and drink, you will also get lost so we will not be looking for you since you will die anyway
- Yanek watches his parents get taken away by nazis. Yanek thinks about surrendering himself to be with his parents but he knows he is a man now and he will do what his parents would want him to do. Yanek is standing with blank teary eyes. Yanek knows what he must do... live.
- Yanek is out on the streets. While Yanek is out he gets taken by the nazis. that's exactly what happened to his parents. He always thought this day would come. He is swepped up and he is about in tears.
- The Nazis explain that if any of the prisoners try to escape, they will die because of the conditions in the salt mine. Yanek is terrified and is amazed at the same time. Yanek looks around to see things like sculptures and chandeliers in the salt mine. Yanek realizes that he will be mining salt. He also notices that there is water under him. (an underground lake)
