- In chapter 4, Yanek and his dad are sneaking out of their flat to go to their uncle's bread shop. When they get there they replace a towel and his uncle is burning wood at the same time as bread to cover up the smell. There are towels on the windows so people can't smell them and can't see them. When they are done helping a bit they are rewarded with bread that they get to take home for breakfast.
- In chapter 12, Yanek is becoming a muselmanner and getting weak and skinny. when struggling to get up to his bed, he found a big space under a loose floorboard. The next day he told two other boys in his barrack. They hid there a lot over the next couple of days, but then one day they hear the scary camp runner that kills a lot of jews. They get so scared and live, but get close to death. Yanek says that he will never hide ing the floorboards again.
- In chapter 14, Yanek is transported to Trzebinia concentration camp where he is forced to do really hard work. He had to carry rock across the campgrounds, but they make him carry them back and forth through the camp. Then he is forced to dig six feet holes and fill them back in. When he is thinking about fighting back a man does instead. He got killed along with other innocents that were killed for him fighting back.
