Storyboard Text

  • Now we're going to talk about fermentation
  • FERMENTATION
  • Does someone know its function?
  • The main function of fermentation is to convert NADH, back into the coenzyme NAD+ so that it can be used again. This process, known as glycolysis, breaks down glucose from enzymes, releasing energy
  • GLUCOSE+2ATP+2NAD+2ADP+2Pi
  • 2 pyruvate+2NADH+4ATP
  • That's correct, the formula I wrote on the board is the one that is needed to catabolyze gloucose, this action is known as Glycolysis
  • 2Pyruvate+2NADH
  • 2 lactate+2NAD
  • If we have oxygen, then the process will be to do cellular respiration. Hence, we are performing aerobic glycolysis, whose final product is pyrevate, but if there's no oxygen available, the final outcome of glycolysis would be lactate
  • Lactate leaves the liver muscle and returns to the liver, where it is tranformed back into gloucose.
  • The respiratory chain cannot occupy lactate, but since there is no oxygen, the anaerobic glycolysis would be carried out. We have all done anaerobic glycolysis when we exercise
