Storyboard Text

  • After being ruled for nearly a century by the Mongols, the Ming Dynasty was founded. The dynasty was established by Zhu Yuanzang (who had been part of the rebellion against the Mongols). Zhu did not trust people and established a secret group of police called the Jinyiwei. However, this was not to last. The Legalist Zhu was overtaken by the Confucianist Hung-wu (shown on next slide).

  • After overtaking Zhu, the new emperor, Hung-wu, moved the capital to Peking (Beijing) and built the Forbidden City: a grandiose, intricate structure.

  • After trading ships were improved by the previous Song dynasty, the Ming traveled farther and interacted with other cultures, spreading their philosophy and gaining new knowledge. An Italian Jesuit missionary later came to China and helped the people with his knowledge (leading to a steady flow of missionaries arriving during the Ming Dynasty.
