- Aung San Suu Kyi was born in 1945 in Burma (now called Myanmar).
- Her father who fought for the independence of Burma passed away when she was only 2 years old.
- She lived the first 40 years of her life overseas.
- In 1988, she moved back to Burma. She started her political career there and her party won the elections.
- After that, the military annulled the results and put her in house arrest for 20 years.
- In 2010, she was released from house arrest. Her party was allowed to run for by-elections in 2012 and won dozens of seats in parliament.
