  • Hey! My name is Timmy and today we will be shrinking down to go through my favourite system, the"Digestive System"! The digestive system is the system that helps you digest your food and take all the important nutrients from your food and successfully excrete the waste products.
  • The first part of the digestive system is going through the mouth. Inside the mouth, the food are chewed up with our teeth and are met with salivary glands. The salivary glands produce saliva , a liquid which helps break down food and gets mixed with the food you chew that becomes a bolus.
  • Down we go!!Weeeeee!
  • The second part of the digestive system is when the bolus travels down the esophagus! (A tube extending from the mouth to the stomach that helps the bolus travel to one another). The walls of the esophagus contains many muscles that push the bolus down to the stomach. Here we go!!
  • Once in the stomach, hormones tell the stomach walls to release acid that breaks down the bolus into a liquid called chyme (A pulpy acidic fluid). The hormones also alert the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas to start creating bile. Food are broken down from the acid in the stomach.
  • In the small intestine, all the nutrients and molecules are absorbed from ingested food and are mixed with mucus making the broken down food to have an easier time to move.
  • Now, in the large intestine the walls of it absorb all the moisture and liquids out of your food to create stool. Stool is your so-called "poop" and is all your food that you ate that has been taken away from its nutrients and fibre by the digestive system to create a solid.
  • Your stool is next placed in a pouch called the sigmoid colon in the large intestine and is ready to excrete the waste (Remove the waste). The process of the digestive system takes around 35 hours in total and the stool leaves the body through the rectum and anus. I hope you learned a lot about the digestive system today by going on this wonderful journey with me.
  • Peace! Timmy, out!
