- You're not eating again surely? You had lunch didn't you? And you are still hugry?
- Hello, you gave me a fright. I did not know that you were coming. I will eat it a little, I am going for a walk and thought I might feel peckish on the way..
- I see, Pavel used to be a doctor in another life Bruno.
- Can I ask you something? It's about Pavel. Remember when I fell off the swing, he helped me and told me he was not really a waiter at all and he used to be a doctor.

- Bruno was filing his pockets with some bread and cheese from the fridge to take with him, Maria came in and stopped when she saw what he was doing.
- Maria is our maid. She is very nice even though Father says that she is overpaid.
- I' am sorry that I am late. I was talking to Maria. She was telling me about this Man Pavel who chops our vegetables for us and waits on table. I think he lives on your side of the fence. Do you know him?

- The soldiers don't normally like people getting better. It usually works the other way around.
- Maria sighed and looked out of the window to make sure that know one was coming, then nodded towards the chairs and both she and Bruno sat down.
- What would you like to be one you grow up? I would like to be a solder like Father. One of the good soldiers. He has impressive uniform and everyone calls him commandant and does whatever he says.
- I want to work in a zoo. I like animals and I would not like to be a soldier. There are not any good soldiers.
- Bruno was late arriving at the place in the fence where he met Shmuel every day , but as usual his new friend was sitting cross-legged on the ground waiting for him.
- Bruno nodded even though even though he did not quite know what Shmuel meant., and gazed up to the sky.
- After a few moments Bruno looked up the wire and asked another question that he had been praying on his mind. Bruno wanted to be a soldier and Shmuel hated them. This tells us that the soldiers had tortured him Bruno dd not know that. This tells us that we should not judge a book by it's cover.
