  • The story flashes back all the way to when Sara was a young Jewish girl living in a village called Aubervilliers-aux-Bois and was told in her perspective. Life was perfect and she was as carefree as a bird. However, that all changed faster than Sara could comprehend. French surrendered to Germany in 1940, and life for Jews changed completely. The government passed many anti-Jewish laws and many people lost their jobs, including Sara's Mama.

The school was trying to get all the kids out and hide them in the woods. Everyone ran to the forest, everyone but Sara. She ran to the bell tower and hid there. Soon, the Nazis found the children in the woods and took them away in a truck. There were three missing kids that the Nazis started to look for, Sara included.
