  • this is so unfair

  • The Start
  • We want to speak in our languages, not Afrikaans!
  • Protest
  • they're going to kill us!

  • In 1953 was the Buntu Education Act, turned into Afrikaans Medium Decree of 1974; forced all black schools to use Afrikaans and English. Last Straw, 1975; all major subjects in black schools had to be taught in Afrikaans.

  • April 30th, 1976, students decide to go on strike on refused to go to school. June 16th, 1976, students decide to have a peaceful protest and walk from school to Orlando Stadium. Sang traditional songs, tension grew between police and the South African black students and teachers.
  • Days Afterwards
  • While the students were protesting, police were everywhere. One police officer let a K-9 go and hurt many kids, people banded together and killed the dog. Police started to move in on the students and teachers. Releasing teargas, and gun shots.
  • Aftermath
  • What is happening in South Africa?
  • Did you hear, kids are dying in South Africa, becuase of the police.
  • Gunshot victims came to hospitals for help. Police came and demanded that they make a list of the victims who came in and who lived, so they could arrest them. Doctors thought it was unfair, so they lied about how many victims they had.
  • Help, I'm going to die. I've been shot
  • The days after the event, it was very tense for everyone in South Africa. Police carried around more weapons and guns, there were also helicopters, and the South African Army. Police roamed the streets and shot anyone who was involved in the protest, including children.

  • There was 600+ deaths, and 4,000+ injured. Photograph of the event got put out into the world, people around the world were confused on what was happening. A turning point of South Africa, now a holiday, South Africa Youth Day.
