- Doodle's brother teaches him how to walk after being told his whole life that he would never be able to walk with his condition.
- Doodle is very sad about the death of The Scarlet Ibis and feels very attached to it, when everyone else goes in to eat breakfast Doodle buries the bird, and everyone watches.
- After Doodle's brother ran away without him his brother came back to see his brother had blood all over him and he was dead next to a berry bush.
