  • Janie and Phoebe impact the plot by demonstrating a true friendship full of understanding. At the end of the book it shows their love for eachother by showing what a single hug could do when hugging a true friend. Chapter 20, ¨Phoebe hugged Janie real hard and cut the darkness in flight.
  • Conflict
  • The everglades impact the plot strongly since it is the place where Tea Cake and Janie decide to settle. Jaine reacts in an overwhelmed way to the everglades. In chapter 14, To Janie's strange eyes, everything in the everglades was big and new.
  • Point of View
  • The theme of love and indepence was conveyed in the novel by walking the audience through Janie's love life, and her journey toward self-fulfillment. Jaine learned many lessons on love through her multiple partners. She was able to realize her self worth and how able she is to be indepent. In Chapter 20, So much life in its meshes! She called in her soul to come and see.¨
  • Language/ Dialect
  • A man vs. man conflict between Janie and her grandma started over young jaine kissing a boy. Janie's Grandma wished for Janie to marry Logan Kilicks, but janie pouted at the idea of marrying an old man she didn't love. Janie's Grandma then proceeded to slap janie in the face. This impacted the novel by already giving Janie a rough start into her love life.
  • The POVs of the novel impact the reader by helping them get a perspective of biased and unbiased opinions. It also gives the readers the impact of being informed. In chapter 19, the narrator, Tea Cake hung back defensively.¨ This small piece of information clarifies to the reader what type of message Tea Cake wanted to give.
  • The dialect in this novel gives the reader that impact of the 1900s, southern accent. It opens a chance to connect with the character of the story by giving the reader a chance to feel connected with the dialect. In chapter 10, Now ain't you somethin'! Mr. er-er-You never did tell me whut yo' name wuz.'
