Storyboard Text

  • About 300 million years ago there was a time called the Carboniferous Period. This was when the Earth was covered in wide shallow seas and dense forests.
  • Because this was so long ago. Large tree-like plants evolved before fungi evolved the ability to break down the fibrous lignin that helped give the plants structure.
  • Coal
  • With the swamps conditions and nothing to make them decay the plants and animals were compressed with overlaying mud and vegetation creating mounts of pressure.
  • As the plants, animals and other debris sift deeper into the earth's surface it encountered increased pressures and higher temperatures.
  • Millions of years later this slowly formed coal
  • Because this process takes millions of years to occur, it makes coal a nonrenewable resource therefore why we have problems with using too much coal today.
