- Chapter 1: Hester has been put in jail with her child.

- In Chapter 2 Hester left jail and had to walk in front of a crowd of people with a scarlet letter "A'' for adultery on her chest.

- In Chapter 3 Hester runs into a man in the outskirts of town. He keeps pressing her about who is the child's father. After he kept harassing her she was brought back to prison.
- In chapter 4 Hester finds out that the man is her husband. He keeps pressing her about who the father of Pearl, the baby, is.

- In chapter 5 Hester was released from prison and started to work a seamstress. She was still shunned from the rest of the town.

- In chapter 6 Pearl has grown up a bit and has started to wonder about her dad and the scarlet letter "A" on her mom's chest. Her and her mother were very isolated from the rest of the community. When Pearl is with her mother she finds herself surrounded by the other children. Instead of befriending them, she just throws stones at them.
