- "'Aren't there any grownups at all?' 'I don't think so.' The fair boy said this solemnly; but then the delight of a realized ambition overcame him. In the middle of the scar he stood on his head and grinned at the reversed boy," (Golding 8).

- "'A stone.' 'No. A shell.' Suddenly Piggy was a-bubble with decorous excitement. 'S'right. It's a shell! I seen one like that before. On someone's back wall. A conch he called it. He used to blow it and his mum would come. It's ever so valuable--'" (Golding 15).
- The Beast
- "'We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They'll come when they hear us,'" (Golding 16)."'Signs of life were visible now on the beach. The sand trembling beneath the heat haze, concealed many figures in its miles of length; boys were making their way toward the platform through the hot, dumb sand, (Golding 18).
