Storyboard Text

  • I was in a rush this morning, I didn't eat breakfast, my Mom was yelling at me to hurry up so I wouldn't miss the bus. Now these guys are bugging me about my shirt, I'm so upset!
  • Hey Jen! You're wearing a boy colour. That shirt is so ugly. Why are you sitting alone, don't you have any friend.
  • Those kids are so mean. I'm so hungry still too. I wish I could just eat something and take a break.
  • Good Morning everyone. Remember today you have music this morning with Mr.Smith so please hang up your bags, change your shoes and lineup at the door.
  • This is the root of the conflict. Students can come to school upset because of something that happened to them in the morning.
  • No, I'm not going to music. I don't like music.
  • Jen please line up with the rest of the class for music.
  • Well let me get the rest of the class gone with Mr.Smith and we figure this out together.
  • Jen's emotions are already triggered and heightened before she even starts school.
  • I need a break first to eat because I'm hungry. I didn't eat breakfast because I woke up late and had to catch the bus.
  • Would you like to talk first or take a break and then talk?
  • The teacher starts this day off with the usual routine getting them ready to be picked up for music. She gives them verbal prompts about what they need to do & a visual schedule can support this.
  • Okay great. I know you like music so I was surprised when you said you didn't want to go. I noticed you were upset as well. Can you tell me why you were upset? Did something happened?
  • I'm ready to talk now.
  • The teacher notices Jen looks upset. Even though it's the teacher's prep time she wants to figure out why Jen really doesn't want to go to music, which she normally likes. If this was an on-going problem (not wanting to go to music) then the conflict would need to be dealt with differently so the teacher's prep time wasn't affected.
  • But because Jen normally goes happily to music, the teacher takes the time today. The teacher is considering the the "why" behind Jen's behaviour instead of focusing on the behaviour itself. She is allowing Jen the to calm down so they can talk about the "why".
  • Okay, take 10 mins to eat something, then if you need more time rest in quiet corner on the bean bag chair. I'll check in with you or you let me know when you're read to talk.
  • Here is the teacher is giving Jen a safe space to talk now that Jen has calmed down.
