- I am tired of all the ill treatment I have received. That's why tonight I plan to take my revenge and resist this life I am forced into. Who will join me?

- Hello Jan. Me and the rest have decided we're going to burn the fields tonight and poison the livestock. Will you join us?
- No. I would rather resist the way I always have than risk my life with the rest of you.
- Pitt a slave for two years is tired of the life he has just been sold into. He believes that just pretending to be ill, slow working and breaking the machetes only puts off the work for a little bit and doesn't affect his Master at all.

- Pitt intends to resist in a way that would hurt his owner the most. He gathers other slaves and does his best to convince them to join him. Many agree quickly as they want their revenge for all they have went through.

- Lets go everyone we've done enough. By now Masa should be seeing the flames we have to go before he sees it us.
- Pitt then goes to Jan his wife working on another plot to ask her to join him. She refuses knowing the consequences for such actions. Jan prefers to resist passively as it allows her moments of rest from her enslavement.

- Later that day Jan pretends to be ill so she can avoid doing work on the plantation and be able to sell some herbs to a friend in town. Her master does not suspect her trickery and readily agrees.
- Masa, I'm not feeling well. Can I return home and come back when I am better?
- That night Pitt and the other slaves are burning the young cane and have killed some of the cattle and sheep. They are gaining satisfaction through their active resistance and are prepared to flee before their Master and overseers catch them in the act.
- However right when they are going to flee they are caught and taken to face severe punishments.
