- Despite being a drunk and an irresponsible parent, he always tries to show that he can take care of his family. Rex tries to stop drinking for Jeannette 117-118"You're the head of the family! You're the dad! Come on!" 125 He takes pride in being able to take care of his family (despite not being able to do so effectively) and being said so, this was the only reason he left with them.
- Lori
- "No" ---"She had to punish someone, and she didn't want to upset the other kids." pg 75
- "Were you acting up?" ----"Then why would Mom paddle you?"
- Rosemary isn't the best mom. She's lazy and her moods are manic. She continues to put up with her drunken husband, for her four kids its seems. Rosemary gets into fights with Rex a lot, in front of the kids, but they seem to make up easily than they should. Her moods are always extreme, she goes from being the happiest person to extremely depressed.
- Jeannette
- "Big deal!" pg 87
- Brain, along with Lori gives up on their father much earlier than Jeannette but yet doesn't fully ruin her image of him. Despite being younger than Jeannette, he makes sure to take care of his sister and the rest of his family, becoming independent. He is a very responsible child (as they all have to be). One instance that shows this would be the time he helped Jeannette fight off the girls that were bullying her.
- Maureen
- "Don't pretend you don't know""That just means you're one of them"pg 275
- Lori is the oldest and in return seems to be the first to become fed up with her parent's lifestyle. Throughout the book, she seems to be the first to do a lot of things. She was the first to get "help" or glasses, the first to move away, and the first to offer help to her parents in NY. Being the oldest held a lot of responsibilities, most falling on her when her parents wouldn't pick them up. Being punished for no reason is just one example of this.
- I picked this part of the book out of everything because it shows where. the abuse really started. Multiple men in her life tried to abuse her, and it was excused by her mother and father constantly. This is just one example of the bad parenting her parents put her through. Despite this, I must say that she grew into an amazing person who could take care of herself, with no thanks to her parents.

- Even though there is more than one person in this scene, I decided to only add Maureen, symbolizing how alone she is compared to the rest of the family. She never really was "part of the family", she stayed at neighbors' houses and let others take care of her instead of taking care of herself like the rest had to. There's a disconnect between her and the rest of the children. They understood how bad the lifestyle was, but she fell right into it.
