  • Kreon returns with the message of Apollo, and offers to tell Oedipus in private. Oedipus insists Kreon say it in front of all of Thebes to show his dedication to his subjects.

  • Kreon transmits the message: a shadow of plague is cast over Thebes. In order to lift the plague, the murder of the old king, Laios. It is also mentioned that Laios' murderer still lives in Thebes. Oedipus begins inquiring about Laios' death.

  • Kreon mentions there was one frightened survivor to the attack on Laios. The survivor only remembered one thing: multiple bandits ambushed Laios.
  • Oedipus' determination turns into question as he could not understand why the people of Thebes stopped looking for Laios' murderers right after his death. Kreon said that the Sphinx persuaded the people to focus on what is to come, not what happened, so they proceeded forward with life.
  • Oedipus finally turns to the people of Thebes, Kreon, and the Priest and assures them in a glorious speech that he will not rest until he can rid the city of the plague that is making them all suffer.
