- Thunder and lightning rage above a moor in Scotland. Out of the storm, three decrepit old witches appear. They make preparations to meet again on the heath after the war, in weird, chanting tones, to confrontMacbeth. He vanishes as soon as they arrive.
- Act 1- Scene 3 - Part 2
- witch 1: You are not as happy as Macbethyet much happierwitch 2:You are lesserthan Macbeth butalso greaterwitch 3:Your descendants willbe kings, even thoughyou wili not be one. Soall hail, Macbeth and Banquo!
- In recent wars, Macbeth and Banquo fought valiantly. After hearing that the disloyal Thane of Cawdor has been defeated, King Duncan of Scotland decides to bestow Cawdor's title on Macbeth.
- Act 1 - Scene 4
- Macbeth and Banquo have both fought bravely in recent battles. King Duncan of Scotland chooses to grant Cawdor's title on Macbeth after hearing that the rebellious Thane of Cawdor has been defeated.
- Act 1 - Scene 5
- Macbeth and Banquo fought honorably in recent conflicts. King Duncan of Scotland decides to confer Cawdor's title on Macbeth after learning of the defeat of the treacherous Thane of Cawdor.
- Duncan greets Macbeth and Banquo and informs them that Malcolm will be his heir to the throne. Macbeth recognizes that as long as Malcolm is alive, he will never be king.
- By making you thane of Cawdorm I have planted the seeds of a great career for you, and I will make sure they grow
- Lady Macbeth learns of the witches' forecasts and is concerned that Macbeth will not take the necessary steps to become king. Duncan is coming to the castle to spend the night, so she arranges Duncan's killing.
