Storyboard Text

  • Hamlet entering the scene
  • Fishmonger insult
  • Excellent well. You are a fishmonger.
  • Do you know me, my lord?
  • Crazy book reading
  • For if the sun breed maggots in a dead dog, being a good kissing carrion-have you a daughter?
  • I have, my lord.
  • What is this guy talking about?
  • Hamlet enters the room reading a book, while the Claudius and Gertrude leave after talking to Polonius.
  • Aside dialogue
  • Still harping on my daughter. Yet he know me not at first; he said I was a fishmonger. He is far gone.
  • Hamlet continues to act crazy in order for his plan to work, so he acts as if he doesn't know Polonius, and he is a fish seller.
  • Extended name calling
  • Old men have gray beards, that their faces are wrinkled, their eyes purging thick amber and plum-tree gum, and that they have a plentiful lack of wit.
  • Hamlet seems to be reading some lines from his book, because what he is explaining here is pretty random. He then asks Polonius if he has a daughter, which is Ophelia, as if he never spoke with her before. Polonius starts to get more suspicious.
  • Leaving the scene
  • You cannot, sir, take from me anything that I will more willingly part withal--except my life, except my life, except my life.
  • My lord, I will take my leave of you.
  • Polonius believes that Hamlet is still in love with his daughter, and he is far gone. He questions why Hamlet didn't know him at first and the names he called him.
  • Hamlet tells Polonius when he becomes old, he will not be very understanding or smart. He calls him weak, wrinkly, and old. He says when himself gets old, he will be the opposite. Polonius thinks he's gone mad after his response.
  • [aside] Though this be madness, yet there is method in't.
  • Polonius asks Hamlet if he would leave with him, but Hamlet refuses and repeats himself 3 times. Aside, it is clear Hamlet is acting because he calls Polonius an old fool. Polonius leaves the scene after Hamlet refuses.
  • [aside] These tedious old fools.
  • Fare you well, my lord.
