  • How much is this monkey for?
  • Ok. I will take it
  • For 5 Rs.
  • Thats a dog.You'll have to pay a fine.
  • Ruskin Bond's grandfather bought a monkey named Toto from a tonga driver for the sum of five rupees. This was because he wanted to add it to his small home zoo.
  • NOOOOOOOO!!
  • Grandmother was always fussy about pets. After buying Toto, grandfather hid Toto so as to hide it from grandmother. But the monkey was so mischievous that it tore the school blazer hanging on the wall. He also tore the expensive ornamental paper on the walls.
  • This monkey is a nuisance for us.
  • Grandfather had to leave for Saharanpur to collect his pension and he decided to take Toto along. But, when he was about to collect his ticket, Toto sticked his head out and scared the ticket collector. The ticket collector was taken aback and fined Grandfather 3 rupees as he categorised Toto as a dog.
  • Take him back!
  • Ugghh.... ok.
  • Ok, but I'll pay only 3 rupees
  • One day, Toto jumped inside a kettle of water kept on fire as he was fond of taking a hot bath. The water kept boiling but, Toto was feeling warm as it was cold outside. When grandmother went into the kitchen, she saw that Toto was being boiled alive and instantaneously took Toto out.
  • Toto was always up to some mischief. One day Ruskin's aunt had come to visit him, so, his grandmother made delicious pulao which was lying at the center of the dining table. Toto saw this as an opportunity and took the plate, climbed a tree, and started stuffing himself. To annoy grandmother, Toto also threw the plate down after eating.
  • Toto was not a pet that Grandfather could keep for long. Grandfather wasn't really well-to-do as he relied on his pension and couldn't afford the constant loss of clothes, wallpapers, and dishes. So, Grandfather sold Toto back to the tonga-driver for only three rupees.
