Storyboard Text

  • The environment started off so peaceful. The birds were flying around in the huge forest, enjoying their time in the warm climate. They caught food and fed their children to prepare them for the next generation. There are five-hundred (500) birds with large, medium, and small beaks (to start off with the same number of birds in each population).
  • But suddenly, one day, there was a heavy snow storm that arrived. It lasted for two quarters of a year. This caused the birds to have no choice but to go along with it.
  • The common trait was the birds with white feathers. This adaptive trait is the most common because the birds with white feathers will be able to camouflage from predators such as lynxes and bears. This variation was the difference in the color of the feathers of each bird.
  • Organisms inherit their traits from their parents. First, the birds reproduce sexually. As this happens, each parent gives one copy of its chromosomes and genes to its offspring. This leads to protein molecules creating the traits in the birds. In this case, the offspring inherit the trait of white colored feathers from their parents in order to be able to survive and camouflage from predators that hunt during the snowstorm. The distribution leads to this trait becoming more common because birds with white feathers survive longer than birds with colored feathers.
  • The trait of white feathered birds became more common and more adaptive because they are now able to hide themselves within the white, thick snow while the colored birds would be too revealing and get killed. Throughout generations, the white feathered birds were able to reproduce a lot more now that they survived.
  • Natural selection is the process in which an individual goes through the distribution of traits within a population that changes over several generations. In my comic strip, we can see how the adaptive trait is the birds with white colored feathers that makes them survive in the population over the course of many generations. On the other hand, the birds with colored feathers were unfortunately able to survive because the color of their feathers was non-adaptive and they could not use their feathers to hide in the snow that remained during the winter phase (environment).
