- It’s the day before Christmas and Della is living in a cheap flat, crying while looking at herself in the mirror.

- I sold the watch to buy the combs.

- Della can’t afford to buy a gift for Jim, she only has $1.87. She has been saving as much money as possible by bargaining with the grocer, vegetable man, and butcher.
- Falling Action
- Let’s put our Christmas presents away and keep ‘em a while. They’re too nice to use right now
- As Della was walking down the street, she noticed a hair store and got the idea of selling her hair for money to buy Jim a Christmas present.
- Resolution
- Della and Jim exchange gifts and realize that they both sold their greatest treasures to buy the presents for each other.
- Della and Jim reassure each other that it’s okay to not have their most valuable items for some time and decide to store their gifts until they can use them.
- Even though they both ended up not being able to use their Christmas gifts, they learned the gift of sacrifice by sacrificing the greatest treasures of their house to make each other happy.
