- I really want to attend, but my parents won't let me because in Kazakhstan you can't dance with boys until 16.
- Rising Action
- Ok.
- We have a policy that anyone who fights must be suspended from school. Both boys will recieve a two day suspension.
- The other boy, who is very bad, is not allowed to come to school for two days and his parents must punish him. Nurzhan must stay home, too. But he should not be punished so much.
- My Favourite Chaperone is a short story about a Grade 9 Kazakh girl named Maya, who recently moved from Kazakhstan with her family to America. Maya faces unique challenges as she adapts to America and the different ways of life.
- Climax

- There's no point Nurzhan don't waste your time
- The story takes place at Beacon Junior High School, where a Spring Fling dance party is happening soon. Maya really wants to attend, but she knows her parents won't let her. Despite this, she still tries to be optimistic thinking that things can change.
- Falling Action
- Maya's brother Nurzhan gets in big trouble after getting into a fight with Ossie, a boy who is constantly teasing Nurzhan. Aibek Alazova, Maya's dad, is in the office discussing the suspension with Mr. Shanaman, the principal of Evergreen Elementary. Maya, who has to translate for her father, fakes some of the translations to help Nurzhan.
- Resolution
- Although tensions are at an time high, Maya still longs to attend the Spring Fling. Even though she knows theres no chance, she still thinks about it everyday. Nurzhan offers to ask for Maya, despite Maya rejecting and believing it was a pointless idea, miraculously, Aibek signs the slip.
- Maya excitedly attends the Spring Fling, and instead of saying Nurzhan is her chaperone, she says that she had to babysit. Nurzhan sits in a corner like a tiny mouse, explaining that he's a bit bored.
- Maya and Daniel continue dancing, but every time they check on Nurzhan, he seems to have disappeared. Turns out, Nurzhan had hidden in the bathroom, probably to not disturb Maya letting her have the time of her life.
