  • The Mountain Men
  • Thanks to Lewis and Clark's expedition, we should find lots of fur!
  • Because little Timmy just HAD to get a snakebite, I have to stop.
  • The Oregon Trail
  • Manifest Destiny
  • We bought New Mexico and California! Manifest Destiny has been fulfilled!
  • The mountain men were fur trappers who were interested in the beaver furs mentioned in Lewis and Clark's expedition. They lived a hard lifestyle and often died young. They had social gatherings called "rendevouz", where they traded and partied. They explored most of the west and created the Oregon and California trails.
  • Mexican-American War
  • This trail was the most popular trail for pioneers heading west. The 2,000 mile trip took 6 months and was taken in covered wagons pulled by oxen. Many travels faced starvation, disease, wagon accidents, and more along the trip. The pioneers who survived the trip would go on to make lives in the west.
  • Mormons in Utah
  • We have found the promised land!
  • "Manifest Destiny" is the idea that the United States is destined by God to expand it's territory and spread democracy across North America. The idea was coined by John O'Sullivan. When the United States bought California and New Mexico from Mexico, many Americans felt that Manifest Destiny had been fulfilled.
  • California Gold Rush
  • The Mexican-American War started with the annexation of Texas into the US. Mexico was furious, they never had accepted the independence of Texas, and felt that it still belonged to them. President Polk then ordered posts to be set up in disputed lands near the Rio Grande and US border. Mexican troops clash with US troops near the border, and the war started. The war started in 1846 and ended in 1848.
  • Mormons are people who follow the Mormon religion. In the mid 1800's, they searched west for a safe place. Many Mormons were kicked out because of their beliefs offending their neighbors. In 1847, they were lead by Brigham Young, the second president of the Mormon church, found Utah and made it their promised land. They named their place Salt Lake City. They expanded the Mormon religion and were the first Americans to settle the Great Basin.
  • The California Gold Rush was a time in history where mass amounts of people came to California in hopes of getting rich from gold. Reports of gold nuggets being found in river brought hundred of thousands of people. People from America, Mexico, China, and many more places came in hopes to strike it rich. Very little people actually got rich off of gold.
  • I'm not getting any gold! :(
