Storyboard Text

  • So, a clever general plays with his enemy like a cat with a mouse. Pretends laziness or weakness...
  • ...then suddenly will pounce. Very good!
  • Stay vigilant and be prepared!
  • See, Liu? There's often more than one solution to a problem.
  • Ha! Now we can have lunch!
  • You must be able to identify all the enemies and your weaknesses and strengths. You also have to be deceptive at the right times and attack when they let their guard down. You must know when they are being deceptive and stay on guard. That is Making Plans.
  • ATTACK!
  • "A skillful general beats his enemy without any fighting. He captures the city without laying siege, he overthrows the kingdom without a long campaign." You want the place you overthrow intact so you can use the resources still there. You must know when to make the right call at the right time based on the number of men on your side to the enemy's side. You also need to know what role to fit your men with. That is Strategic Attacks.
  • You see anything or anyone?
  • Not a single thing.
  • A simple situation is when you have advanced a short way, so you can easily retreat. When you have ground that offers an advantage to any side, it is called a contentious position. An open position is when you should not block the enemy because they can easily outmaneuver you at any moment. These are some of the nine situations you can be in.
  • Use your weapons!
  • Attack immediatly!
  • Ambush! We need help!
  • The attacker and defender must know what not to defend and what not to attack. You can advance and taunt, attacking the weak spots and retreat back quickly to avoid being followed. If you want to attack, attack the weak spots. If followed, no matter what, they will be forced to send for help. If you do not want to attack, you distract the enemy in odd and unaccountable ways.
  • When your enemy divides their troops, keep yours together. You will then have a single, large body, while your enemy will have lots of small forces. It will be many against few. Keep where you attack concealed. That way, the enemy will have to defend multiple different points in his flank. When he guards one end, the other end will instantly weaken. Weakness comes from many attacks. Strength comes from making the enemy prepare for those attacks.
  • A general who understands war also understands tactical variation. The five advantages are these: if a road is short, follow it. If an army is isolated, attack it. If a town is in a precarious position, besiege it. If a position can be stormed, attempt it. And if consistent with military operations, the ruler's command must be obeyed.
