- Kino looked as Coyotito laid in the hanging box. Juana cleaned Coyotito and sang an ancient song to him. Kino and Juana then ate breakfast and as the walked back inside their home they saw the scorpion by Coyotito’s hanging box. Before Kino could get to the scorpion it bit Coyotito. Juana sucked the poison out of the bite and said they should go to a doctor.
- What is the value of the pearl?
- 1000 pesos
- “Kino deftly slipped his knife into the edge of the shell. Through the knife he could feel the muscle tighten hard. He worked the blade lever-wise and the closing muscle parted and the shell fell apart. The lip-like flesh writhed up and then subsided. Kino lifted the flesh and there it lay, the great pearl, perfect as the moon. It captured the light and refined it and gave it back in silver incandescence. It was as large as a seagulls’s egg. It was the greatest pearl in the world.”
- The doctor went to Kino’s house because he heard of the pearl Kino had found. The doctor seemed to be very interested in the pearl. Kino had buried the pearl so that no one would steal it. The doctor saw kino looking at the spot where he had buried the pearl.
- Kino came to sell his pearl and the whole town came to see it. However, the pearl buyer tries to cheat Kino and tells him it is of no value. Kino thought that the pearl buyers was trying to cheat him so he invited the other buyers to see and they all claimed the pearl was fake.
- That is not true!
- Juana has attempted to take the pearl and get rid of it. Before she could throw it back into the ocean Kino saw her and struck her in the face, and kicked her on her side. A dark figure came and took the pearl. Juana then recovered it and went to get Coyotito from their house to escape. When she got to their home it was lit on fire. They went to Kino’s brother Juan Thomas’s house and then headed north during the night.
- Kino places Juana and Coyotito in a shallow cave. They are being followed by the trackers because Kino killed a man and they want to take his pearl. Kino decides to try and steal one of the trackers rifle. Kino succeeds at taking the rifle but not before Coyotito gets shot in the head and dies.
