- Kupe was a famous Maori warrior. He loved to fish in many different places in Aotearoa and Hawaaki.
- Kupe would spend most of his days and nights catching fish to feed his people.
- Kupe and the other fishermen started finding holes in their nets and no fish. They were very confused.
- Kupe decided to stay on the beach that night to find out what was happening. That night he saw a giant octopus. Te wheke was taking the fish from the nets. Kupe was furious.
- Kupe jumped in his waka to chase after te wheke. He chased him from Hawaiiki to the Shores of Aotearoa. As they fought great gorges were carved out of the land and the sea rushed in.
- Kupe struck te wheke again and again. Raining blows down onto his head. Kupe was very strong and fast. But te wheke had eight arms and was also quick.
