  • There was an attempt in 1963 by the Yolngu people to regain the land but it was unsuccessful. A lot of Aborigines that that their land rights will never be recognised
  • On August 23rd 1966, Aboriginals in Wave Hill got fed up with the bad conditions and not being given land rights so they walked up off the job. This strike lasted around 8 years and non aborigines also joined in.
  • The strike was successful and on the 16th of August 1975, Prime Minister Gough Whitlam gave back 300 000 square kilometers of the Gurindji people's traditional land. Whitlam poured sand into Lingiari's hand symbolising the return of their land.
