Storyboard Text

  • Jake's eyes widen open and he hurriedly moves to the side. But, like his broken heart, the seat on the couch where Max used to sit is now vacant. He takes a long breath - more of a sigh - and closes his eyes tightly.
  • Jake’s eyes snap open, and he quickly turns to the side. But like hisaching heart, the spot where Max always sat on the couch remains empty.
  • They had been inseparable for 15 years. Always next to each other. The beach walks with the soft waves crashing and the birds cawing. All those trail excursions, and even a trip to the grocery store for something Martha might have forgotten.
  • Though he knows he should be grateful for merely spending their time together, those memories will always be seared in his mind. He seems to be oblivious to the years that may have been.
  • Max's illness struck suddenly, rather than dragging for weeks or months.
  • Unable to sleep , he looks around the all too empty room, letting his gaze fall upon the leash, which still hangs from the peg by the door.
  • As his eyes well up, he realizes for the first time how much his grief weighs, how hard it is even to rise with such a heaviness inside.
  • It seems to wait patiently, ever ready for the next big adventure.
  • It is then he hears a shuffle from behind and turns to see Martha standing in the doorway, her shoulder resting against the frame.
  • I thought you might be here. I miss him, too, Jake. More than you'll ever know.
  • Her voice has a distant sorrowful tone to it, but he knows her heart, like his, is missing something.
  • I guess you do know, don't you, Jake.
