  • I will call upon for a crusade immediately! "Soldiers of Christ!" We need your assistance to defend the holy cities! We will have a holy war, a Crusade!!!
  • Date: 1071Dear my friend Pope Urban II,I have terrible news. The Seljuk Turks have taken over Jerusalem and have marched around our beloved city of Constantinople. We need your help to defend ourselves from this terrible attack.- Emperor of the Byzantine Empire
  • Deus le veult! God wills it! We will fight in this Crusade through all the battles and war! The crusades will wash us of our sins! Deus le veult! God wills it!
  • I am Jean de Join ville! Listen to my words, I will never turn back, for if I do, I may wish to abandon this lovely crusade, and go after my castle and two children.
  • Unfortunately, the first crusade failed, due to the crusader's lack of experience and the power of the Turks. However, by 1099, the crusade had established four crusader states, recaptured Jerusalem, and turned back the advance that the Turks had started on Constantinople. But then, in 1144, the crusader state of Edessa fell, leaving the pope to call upon a second crusade.
  • Yes!
  • * From left to right: Eleanor of Aquitaine, King Louis VII, German Emperor, and Pope Urban II.
  • But are you sure you can organize this Crusade?
  • Unfortunately, just as the First, the Second Crusade also failed. Mainly because the crusaders could not gain local support from the Muslims but also because of other... issues. In 1187, the Muslim leader Saladin recaptured Jerusalem.
  • I will not let you take my family, dead or ALIVE!!!
  • We should attack at dawn.
  • Yes, but wouldn't it be better to attack at noon instead??
  • No!!
  • In 1189, the third crusade began. It was organized by many rulers, those of France, England, and Germany, hence the name "Crusade of the Kings." Saladin, though the enemy, was respected and honored. After 3 years of crusade, Saladin and Richard "Lionheart" (The leader and victor of this crusade.) signed a treaty that ended the crusade, protected Christian pilgrims, and respected crusader lands. But Jerusalem still belonged to the Muslims.
  • In the very early 1200s, the pope launched the fourth crusade. Unfortunately, this was a big mistake. The crusaders never made it to the holy lands, instead looted the city of Constantinople to fund for the campaign. They smashed icons, stole relics, and attacked many people. The pope, obviously, was furious, and the Byzantines never forgave the Catholic Christians.
  • IAfter the fourth crusade, the hope and energy of the crusades died down, and few achieved their goals. Eventually, the Muslims gained strength and destroyed the crusader states. This was a very interesting time in history.
