Rizal left Hong Kong on board Oceanic on February 22, 1888 to Japan. He arrived on the 28th of February in Japan. He met Juan Perez Caballero, Secretary of Spanish Legation.

In February 18, 1888, Rizal visited Macau on board Kiu-Kiang ship, together with Jose Ma. Basa. They stayed at Don Juan Lacaros' residence.
