Amelia starts her 1st day of 1st grade. She is turning 5 and wants to have a big birthday party like all of her other friends. Amelia decides that she wants to have a princess party like all of the other girls in her class, so she asks her mom to help her plan her party.
Amelia decides that she can’t be a princess and have a princess party without looking like a princess, so she has her mom take her shopping. She spots the perfect dress, one that she’s confident that her favorite princesses would wear.
“Mommy, can I please have this one?” Amelia asks, and her mom, looking at a little white piece of paper hanging off of the dress, shakes her head with a sad smile on her face. Amelia unhappily walks out of the store, thinking about her perfect dress the whole car ride back to her house.
“I know that you didn’t get to get the party dress that you wanted, but what about looking for a place to have your party?” her mom asks. Amelia gets excited again, and they start to look at places to have her party online. But when Amelia asks to have her party somewhere, her mom keeps shaking her head with the same sad smile from earlier. Eventually, Amelia sadly gives up looking, going to bed thinking that her party will be the worst party of the year.
After school a few days later, Amelia’s mom picks her up to take her to her birthday party. They drive in a direction that her mom had never driven in before, and when Amelia asks where they’re going, her mom just smiles. This time, her smile is a little happier and even excited. Amelia’s mom finally parks the car in the parking lot of a big hotel that towers over the car like a giant, surrounded by lots of other cars and people. The girls walk into the building, and there’s a woman, Amelia’s favorite teacher Mrs. Brooks, waiting for them.
With a kind smile, Mrs. Smith hands Amelia’s mom a bag that’s holding what looks like a…a dress! Amelia can’t help herself and unzips the bag, clapping her hands and squealing with excitement when she sees a dress in front of her looks even prettier than the one from the store that she saw the other day. Amelia can’t believe that she ended up getting the dress that she wanted, but there seems to be more because Amelia’s mom grabs her hand and leads her further into the hotel to the bathroom where her mom asks her to quickly get dressed.
