"My Dearest Love,I've said everything I need to say except this. This one last thing. Please look after June for me. Please promise to take the very best care of my only girl. With so much love my heart might split into two...Finn" (262)
The theme that developed in the novel was that the feeling of loss and loneliness brings people together in unimaginable and unexpected ways. Throughout the book, characters were able to connect with each other over the grief they shared. June and Toby both loved Finn, June and her mother found out aspects other each others' lives that they did not know about, and June and Greta reconnected over how their emotions tore apart their sisterhood. The wolf represents being alone, but when wolves join together to form a pack they can achieve more than they could before.
Theme Development #3
“‘Toby, he has nobody, right? Right, June? Well, who do you think I have?’” (285)
In this scene, June learned about a side of her mother that she usually kept hidden. She was open to sharing her old memories with Uncle Finn because it was a way for her to let go of the sadness she held inside. Her mom told her about the family trips to the beach and how she felt like it as her job to take care of Finn. June was able to relate to the responsibility she faced because she had to take care of Toby. Later, June found out that some of the parts of Finn that she adored, came from her mother, which made her feel closer to her.
Thematic Solution
Toby and June realized that they shared the same responsibility of taking care of one another although originally, neither one knew this about each other. When they found out that Finn had set them up to find the love they were missing from within each other, they began to comprehend their new purpose. While Toby was showing June the paintings Finn had made, both of them became emotional and all the grief they were holding back, flowed out of them. After this incident, their previously forced friendship was not as strained and the theme that people can come together even in the most unusual circumstances.
"Dearest June,I need to tell you, Everything so wrong. Toby has nobody. Please Crocodile believe me. He is good and kind. Look after him. For me. Need new hands. These are all used up! Can you read this? Will haunt the Cloisters for you if I can. With so much love, Finn" (153)
In chapter 54, Greta finally began to open up to June about her own mental struggles with school and the musical. The pressure to be the best was eating her from the inside. Although June could not say that she understood her emotions, she did know about being on the other side of the spectrum. Both sisters were becoming tired of going against each other and they wanted to restore the relationship they had before. This demonstrates the theme that the struggles and fear of losing someone connects people in the most fortuitous ways.
