- Simon Kelleher has a gift for figuring out what his classmates at Bayview High School are up to. He spreads these secrets, as well as rumors and unpleasant comments about his peers, through a gossip app he built called About That.
- Simon and four other seniors find themselves in detention one September day. Simon's app rarely mentions Addy Prentiss, Bronwyn Rojas, or Cooper Clay, but Nate Macauley, who is regularly in trouble and is a ladies man, does. Mr. Avery, the teacher, has given all five children detention for having cell phones in class, which they believe were planted. When a car accident occurs outside, Mr. Avery rushes outside to ensure that no one has been injured.
- Simon takes a drink of water a few moments later and collapses nearly quickly. Simon is whisked away by paramedics after a frenzied hunt for an EpiPen turns up empty, and he is subsequently pronounced dead.
- Cooper and his girlfriend, Keely, are friends with Addy and her boyfriend, Jake. Since her younger sister, Maeve, survived illness, Bronwyn, whom Nate has known since kindergarten, has been an overachiever. As the police appear to be treating Simon's death as if it was not an accident, speculation regarding his death swiftly spreads throughout Bayview High School. When someone posts an internet post claiming to be Simon's murderer, the police approach the four pupils who were in detention with him. Simon's backlog of unreleased About That stuff is also discovered by the cops, hinting that Addy, Bronwyn, Cooper, and Nate each have a secret to hide. The police felt that Simon's death helped them all because it stopped the rumors from spreading.
- Jake and Addy have been together since freshman year, but Addy is concerned about what will happen if Jake discovers that she was involved with someone else the previous year. That's her little secret.
- Bronwyn, although being a good student, once stole chemistry exam answers from her teacher's computer. She is concerned about what will happen if this information is made public. Bronwyn is also confronted by the cops with an old About That post. Bronwyn was clearly enraged when Simon penned a demeaning account of her sister Maeve's first high school party and made light of her cancer diagnosis.
