- Starr Carter is a African-American teenager who has naturally curly hair and wears it in braids.

- As Starr is trying to get justice for her friend Khalil she does a interview with a news station to speak on the events that occured.
- Who do they like/dislike?
- Starr has a friend named Hailey who she accuses of being racist for multiple reasons. Starr eventually is fed up with Hailey and stops being friends with her.

- What/ who does the character love?
- One character that Starr loves is Khalil. He dies at the beginning of the story but she goes through a lot to get justice for him because she loves him.
- Starr thinks a lot about what she could have did to prevent the killing of Khalil and what she can do now to get justice for him.
- What does the character think about?
- Starr is a person who cares about people just as much a she cares for herself, maybe even more. She also is a person that is big on being fair and having justice. Starr is a very family-type of person and loves people close to her.
