  • One morning, before the first cock had crowed, the silence of Umofia was shattered by the beating of the ekwe  and the distant wailing of women, symbolizing someone's recent death.

  • Iguedo went around announcing the death of Ezeudo, which sent a chill down Okonkwo's spine, since he remembered the time when he was visited by the late man. During this visit, the man told Okonkwo to "Bear no hand in his (Ikemefuna) death." since the young boy called him father.
  • We'll be going to Mbanta, my homeland, for 7 years.

  • Since Ezeudo was a great warrior, a large and fitting funeral was set up for him, to celebrate his life and the achievements he earned throughout. Ancient drums were beat, and guns and cannons were fired.
  • Just as things were going fine, something unimaginable occured. As the air was filled with smoke from the guns and the smell of gunpowder, Okonkwo's gun explodes and a piece of iron pierces Ezeudo's 16 year old son
  • Because Okonkwo had committed a crime that was against the earth goddess, he was forced to flee the land with his family. However though, because this situation wasn't a deliberate one, he was eligible to return after 7 years of exile.
  • After Okonkwo and his family had fled, a group of men from Ezeudu's quarter arrived at Okonkwo's compound to burn his hut, his barns, and everything they could find. Despite doing all this, they had no anger or hatred in their hearts for Okonkwo, as it was something they were required to do.
