  • My dearest Margaret,
  • With all my love,Beth Webster, nee BouvierSmoke Hollow, 1895
  • When the mist rises, and the smiling man comes walking, you must avoid large places at night.Keep to small.
  • Olivia Adler (Ollie) a 6th grade student in East of Evansburg, was about to go home when she hears a shriek nearby and turns around to see what it is, almost everyone in the sixth grade was spectating Coco Zinter, whom had just moved in from the city, hopping around like a flea trying to get her diary back from Phil Greenblatt. Everyone could see that it had a drawing of Brian Battersby, the star of the hockey team. They started teasing Coco more and more until she broke down in tears. Even though Ollie didn't really like Coco she couldn't stand it any more and she threw a rock at Brian. She would have thrown it at Phil but he was facing her and she didn't want to hit someone in the eye so instead she hit Brian whom she was also mad at because he just stood and did nothing for poor Coco. All attention was diverted to her instead of Coco, Coco took the opportunity to snatch her diary back and then scurry away, Ollie left and started biking really fast to get away.
  • The Three Tombstones
  • On a fair sunny dayTwo grown boys went out to playBut only one went home-
  • After racing off very fast Ollie headed to her swimming hole, a secret place where she could be all by herself and relax. To her surprise there was a woman there, and as she got closer, she noticed that the woman had been crying because she had mascara streaks running down her eyes. The woman asked Ollie how she was doing, and Ollie could tell how hard she was trying to smile, she also noticed that the woman was holding a book in her hand. Ollie asked the woman if she was okay and she said she was fine that she only needed to get rid of the book and throw it into the water. Ollie offered that she could donate the book to the library or somewhere else, but then the woman snapped at her and told her that she had to, that was the bargain. She kept talking to herself about a smiling man she made a bargain with, while she was distracted Ollie snatches the book from the woman's hand and says that if she doesn't want it that she'll take it. The woman goes crazy and then calms down a little and tells her that she will give her a piece of advice, “Small spaces! Keep to small spaces or see what happens to you! Just see!”.Ollie then races off to home on her bike.
  • The Crazy Bus Driver
  • You have to get moving to the forest.
  • Ollie gets home and goes to her room right away and skips dinner. She begins to read the book that she stole from the crazy lady, the book is titled Small Spaces and it has no author. The book is written like a letter and it is written to Margaret, it tells her that she needs to leave the farm and never come back, that she is danger, when the mist rises at night. This was written by Beth Webster, at Smoke Hollows in 1895. Ollie is fascinated by the story and on the next page she fing an epigraph that says: “When the mist rises, and the smiling man comes walking, you must avoid large places at night. Keep to small.” After that Ollie keeps reading but eventually falls asleep.
  • The Scary Forest
  • We need to hide in a small space.
  • WE SEE YOU
  • Ollie is on a field trip to the local farm and get very bored of being in a tour that consists of teasing (mostly toward Coco), and the the crazy lady that she met at the poolhole, Ms. Webster the owner of the farm (who for some reason seems to be scared of the school bus driver and Mr. Seth, someone who helps out at the farm). When no one is looking she wanders off, and finds three graves that say: Jonathan Webster, Elizabeth Webster, d. 1894. May the dead lie quiet. The last one said, Caleb Webster, Catherine Webster. Out of nowhere she hears the voice of the bus driver, who tells her that there are four graves and three stones but only two sets of bones. He was starting to spook Ollie, and she was about to leave when he started saying that all four souls are unquiet and when the mist comes off the creek something bad will happen. Then out of nowhere Seth comes out and asks if she is okay and if he's scaring her, and saving her from having to keep talking to the scary bus driver.
  • Hey! What are you doing!
  • When everyone was on the bus and ready to leave they took off, but the bus suddenly came to a slow stop, the bus had broken down. Ollie turned to her window to see where they were but she couldn't see anything. There was too much mist outside. The bus driver got up and told everybody that it would be best if they got moving because at nightfall they will come for all of them. Everybody started laughing as if it was a very funny joke and then Mr. Easton said he would call the farm and the school to notify them that the bus had broken down. Nobody had service in their phone, so Mr. Easton decided to check the engine to see if he could fix anything, but Ollie had a bad feeling about it. Time passed and they were still there. Ollie had a special watch that was her moms, it could tell time and was also a compass. It didn't really work but kept it as a memory of her mom (who had died a couple of years ago). She looked down on her watch and it said RUN and there was a countdown going on (45:02). She got up frantically and asked the bus driver what happens at nightfall and who's coming for them but he said he couldn't tell her that he had already had said too much, so she gave him a sandwich. He answered that his people, his servants were coming to get them, she asked who he was and he said that he had many names. She asked what his people were going to do and he said that they were going to take them to him so that the bargains would be complete. She asked where they should go and he said the forest and fast.
  • Where should we go?
  • Ollie gets off the bus quickly but before she leaves the bus driver reminds her once again that she must stick to small spaces. As she runs off to the forest Coco catches up to her and asks where she's going and she tells her it's not safe there anymore that she needs to move. Coco decides to go with her but is very scared, then Brian appears and asks the same and he also decides to go with them. Meanwhile her clock is at 8:00 of the countdown and the RUN is flashing now. She tells them they have to leave now, they are looking for the farm and as they walk Brian sees a human and tries to go talk to him but it's just a scarecrow. Coco starts seeing eyes in the forest and Ollie tells her to ignore them; they are probably just animals. It starts getting darker and her watch now says HIDE. There are scarecrows everywhere now and everything is getting scarier and then they see WE SEE YOU written on a tree and there is a scarecrow with paint on his jacket. They make more noises and then they notice that the scarecrows are moving around. They decided to go back to the bus but then they heard screams, childrens screams coming from the direction of where the bus was. Her watch is now at 0:00.
