- The 13 British colonies were established in 1754, but closely after the French wanted their own colonies as well. They ended up fighting over land, the French being allied with the Indians and the British with the colonists. This was a year-long war, which started from 1756-1763. In the end, the British and colonists won, Making it official, they signed the Treaty of Paris in 1763. This gave the British more teritory.

- After winning the 7-year war, the British were in severe debt. They decided to raise the tax of the Colonists to make up the money lost. Colonists were upset that they were taxed, causing chaos by not paying their taxes. This set up a Continental Army with George Washington as their leader. This caused this crisis to explode into war. This was known as the "Shot Heard Round the World"
- Battle of Yorktown
- The second congress was made to discuss the next moves of the colonists, which they met in Philadelphia. They wanted independence from Britain, so they called this the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson was the main author, but along with the rest of the founding fathers, the declaration of Independence was made on July 4th, 1776. It emphasized the principle of popular sovereignty.

- After defeating the British at the Battle of Saratoga, the French wanted to join the Americans to fight Britain as well after losing the French and Indian War. They saw how powerful the Americans were in war and wanted to get back at the British. The French helped with a plethora of supplies, soldiers, and warships.

- The battle of Yorktown was the last major battle that the Americans fought. They surrounded the British with their numbers, having them surrender to George Washington on Oct 19, 1781. They returned to the Treaty of Paris in 1783 to end all wars, and America being seen as independent to Britain.

- After being recognized as their own country, America made their own constitution, A New Constitution. John Locke contributed by adding natural rights, which include life, liberty, and property along with the Bill of Rights. Jean-Jacques Rousseau contributed with freely elected governments, keeping democracy by letting the people vote for their leader.
