  • 3 ESTATES
  • In earlier times, the society of France used to be divided into 3 Estates:1st estate: Consisted of the Clergy.2nd Estate: Consisted of Nobility.3rd Estate: Consisted of peasants, artisans etc. Only the third estate paid taxes.
  • Assembly of the Estates General
  • On 5 May 1789, Louis XVI, the king at that time, called an assembly of the Estates General to pass proposals for new taxes at a hall in Versailles. Opposing to the principle of each estate having one vote, the third estate demanded one vote for each member. When the king rejected, they walked out in protest.
  • EACH MEMBER SHOULD HAVE ONE VOTE!
  • VOTING SHOULD BE CONDUCTED BY THE ASSEMBLY AS A WHOLE!
  • A New Constitution
  • On 20 June 1789, they assembled in the hall of an indoor tennis court in Versailles. They declared themselves a National Assembly and swore not to disperse till they drafted a constitution that would limit the powers of the monarch. They were led by Abbé Sieyès and Mirabeau.
  • WE ARE A NATIONAL ASSEMBLY!
  • We won't leave until we draft a new constitution for France!
  • Storming of the Bastille
  • Abolishing the Feudal System
  • Okay, I agree.
  • Why do I have to give up powers!
  • Now, we will pass a decree abolishing the feudal system of obligations and taxes.
  • THANK YOU!
  • MERCI!
  • While the National Assembly was busy at Versailles, the rest of France seethed with turmoil. A severe winter caused a bad harvest, the prices of bread rose, bakers hoarded supplies. After long hours of waiting, women stormed into the shops. At the same time, the king ordered troops to move into Paris. ON 14 JULY, THE AGITATED CROWD STORMED AND DESTORYED THE BASTILLE.
  • Faced with the power of his revolting subjects, Louis XVI finally accorded recognition to the National Assembly and accepted the principle that his powers would now on be checked by a constitution. On the night of 4 August 1789, the Assembly passed a decree abolishing the feudal system of obligations and taxes. Members of the clergy were also forced to give up powers. Tithes were abolished.
