Toussaint L'Ouverture was born into slavery on May 20, 1743 in Saint Domingue. However, he learned to read and write (from his father), because he realized he was more than just a slave.

Toussaint joined the rebellion early on as a general in 1789.

Not until 1798 did he become the leader of the slave rebellion.
In 1793, Toussaint won 7 battles in 7 days to help the French army eject the British and Spanish.
By 1803 Napoleon was ready to get Haiti off his back: he and Toussaint agreed to terms of peace. Napoleon agreed to recognize Haitian independence and Toussaint agreed to retire from pcublic life. However, Napolean betrayed him and brought Toussaint bak to France.
Napoleon ordered that Toussaint be placed in a prison dungeon in the mountains, and murdered by means of cold, starvation, and neglect. Toussaint died in prison on April 7 1803, but others carried on the fight for freedom.
