Käthe Kollwitz was born in 1867 in Prussia to a middle class family. Growing as a girl she was put into the best art opportunity a woman could have at the time learning to be open minded and creative.

After their marriage, they moved to Berlin and they started a doctor office/art studio running for 50 years even after having two kids.

Kollwitz focused on self-portraits, mother and son portraits (having two sons of her own) mainly focusing on line and hand paints being influenced by her political ideas (socialism)

One of Kollwitz sons died during World War One in 1914 influencing her art works obsession on death especially after her grandson died during World War Two.
Kollwitz was never ever to fulfill her emotional goals and political goals of frustration of falling short. But drawing paintings of her trauma was a relieving sign for her.
