Secondary Succession begins with an established "Climax Community" that is rich in life that includes plants and a wide community of animals
Pioneer Species
A forest fire has broken out and destroyed the climax community killing all of the Biotic material found and leaving behind only Abiotic parts of the ecosystem
Shrubs & Small Trees
Once the fire is out, all the Biotic life is wiped out and the ecosystem is gone with the exception of those plants whose roots are deep in the soil. Wind and rain will begin to bring in new seeds.
New Climax Community
Native plant species such as annuals, such as grasses, small shrubs, and other types of plants begin to reappear after the fire has taken place. Small animals like mice and squirrels begin to reappear.
As the ecosystem recovers, a more diverse group of animals and larger trees, grasses, and flowers begin to emerge. This will take at least 5 -10 years.
We have reached the "Climax Community" where there is a diverse ecosystem that includes a balance between the biotic and abiotic components.
