  • Person vs Person
  • How would you know if it is a silly book you've never read it.
  • In this particular scene in the book Lyddie The protagonist, Lyddie is walking to Lowell Massachusetts to become a factory girl her feet start hurting so she sits on a rock to rest and take off her house for a second then it starts training dogs and cats. "it began to rain not light spring showers, but cold, soaking torrents of rain, streaming down her face, iciling rivulets down her chest and legs."(47). Lyddies feet already hurt and then it started to put and she must walk to the nearest town in the harsh rain. Lyddie has to find a place to rest which probably made her very angry and caused a conflict between the weather and Lyddie because it is getting in the way of her journey.
  • Ezekial is talking to Lyddie about how the stevens helped him and that he had to hide in her house because slave catchers were looking for him, then he tells her about his past before he went into hiding and tells her that he left his family to get money for them and now because of people thinking he is a slave by his skin color he is sick in hiding. "And here I sit, sick and penniless, hiding for my life, totally dependant on the kindness of others for everything." ( 42) Is is an example of a person vs society because Ezekial is going against society thinking at the time that people with darker skin are all slaves be Ezekial is free and still has to hide from slave catchers for his life. This is a conflict as the slave catchers represent society and their thinking that people with darker skin are slaves and this probably angers or upsets Ezekial as he knows that he is a free man.
  • in anger, she tells Lyddie that the book she is reading is just a silly book this angers Lyddie because amelia has never read the book and for that reason, she should not be telling her it is silly they both are angry at each other which is what caused the conflict " 'you've already read this book. I've seen you and besides, it's only a silly novel-not fir for reading and a sin on the sabbath-' Lyddie could feel the gorge rising in her throat. silly novel? It was life and death. 'you ain't read it,' she said forgetting her grammar in her anger". (90) In anger, she tells Lyddie that the book she is reading is just a silly book this angers Lyddie because amelia has never read the book and for that reason, she should not be telling her it is silly this anger on both sides is what caused the conflict.
