Storyboard Text

  • Hi my name is Marcellina and I will explain the process of digestion in the alimentary canal as a chapatti.
  • I am first taken into the mouth. This is called ingestion.Saliva present in the mouth converts the starch present in me nto simple sugar. Saliva also makes me easier to swallow by making me wet and slippery. This is called mastication.
  • Then I am transported to the stomach by food pipe or oesophagus. Oesophagus muscles gently push me in a wave-like motion called peristalsis.
  • The digestive juices digest the proteins present in me.
  • Mucous protects the inner linings of the stomach.Hydrochloric acid kills the bacteria present in me.I get partly digested in the stomach.
  • Then I move to the small intestine. The bile juice acts on fats and fats get converted into tiny droplets known as fatty acids or glycerol. The pancreatic juice acts on carbohydrates, fats and proteins and changes them into simpler forms.I am now partly digested and move to the lower part of the small intestine where the intestinal juice completes the digestion of all components of food.
  • I am fully digested and now pass to the blood vessels in the wall of small intestine. The absorbed substances are transported via the blood vessels to different organs where they are used to build complex substances such as proteins required by the body. This is called assimilation.
  • The food that cannot be digested moves from small intestine to large intestine. Here, most of the water presenting me is absorbed. I am now almost solid. I move to the last part of the large intestine called rectum. Then, I pass out of the body through anus. This process is called egestion.
