- Mom Luby is an elderly woman who has been caring for Elijah and Arlethia (Puddin') since their mother died three years ago. She is unable to sustain them, so she goes to the Welfare Office to apply for State Aid. But, in order to be eligible, she must lie about being their mother.
- Scene 4
- A knock was heard at the door some time later, and Elijah went to see who it was. The door opened to reveal a brownskin clothed in dark blue and carrying a large envelope. She went on to introduce herself as Miss Rushmore from the Department of Child Welfare's Bureau of Family Assistance.
- Scene 5
- She asks Mom Luby some questions in order to fill out the form that was left blank at the office. Mom Luby lies and uses casual conversation to draw attention away from the interview. Mom Luby is then instructed to return to the Welfare Office to complete additional paperwork. Mom Luby responds that she is busy, and Miss Rushmore joins her on her errands.
- Scene 6
- They returned to the speakeasy, where the interview was resumed. Mom Luby was eventually notified that she was ineligible for State Aid. Miss Rushmore also enquired as to how she managed to get more done in two hours than she had in two years.
- Miss Rushmore leaves as everyone laughs at her 😂
- Mom Luby understood Miss Rushmore's point. "To fill out forty pieces of paper for one pair of shoes, you needed an education." And they went on with their normal lifestyle.
