  • France Is Bankrupt
  • National Assembly
  • There were three estates. The First Estate had a population of 130, 000 (High-ranking church officials) they had many privileges and had no taxes to pay. The Second Estate had a population of 110,000 nobles and had to pay no taxes. The Third Estate had a population of 25,000,000, which included everyone else (city workers, merchants, peasants, etc.) and had to pay all the taxes.
  • Storming of the Bastille
  • The King (Louis XVI) and Queen Marie Antoinette were spending lots of money buying unnecessary things like stuff for the palace, dresses, fashion, etc. The government was also spending more money than it had collected from tax revenues. This led to huge debts, which led to increased taxes on the Third Estate (First and Second Estates refuse to pay taxes).
  • Reign of Terror
  • The king didn't want a written constitution. He planned to use military force against the National Assembly. When news got out about his plan on July 14, 1789, people stormed the Bastille.
  • Napoleon
  • Many members of the Third Estate storm the Bastille, which was where the king used to imprison anyone he chose. This day becomes France's Independence Day and the day the National Assembly issues the declaration on the rights of man.
  • 17,000 people were beheaded by Maximilien Robespierre and after 1 1/2 years, the convention had enough killings and beheaded Maximilien Robespierre.
