  • The French revolution was a motive for the Haitian revolution. Slaves in Haiti heard about the French revolution and pondered on the idea of rebelling against the slave owners. The French revolution was an inspiration to them to rebel for their own sake.
  • Method
  • Slaves were treated very poorly on plantations and denied rights and freedom. They worked very laborious jobs and were beat if they didn't obey their owners. The strive for liberty, freedom, and equality was a motive for the Haitian revolution.

  • Toussaint L'Ouverture led an army of slaves to fight against white men. The slaved army outnumbered the white men 12-1, however with their lack of military experience and no long term strategy, a win did not look favorable for them.

  • Slaves burnt down plantations in an act of rebellion. This was the final straw for the French. The French were driven out from Haiti as a result of the fires.
  • As a result of the revolution, Haiti became a republic. Not only that, but it became the first black republic.
  • The Haitian revolution was the first successful slave revolt. It showed people that anyone, no matter your position in society, can revolt and be successful.
