Storyboard Text

  • Hello! My name is Susan Benton-Nash and I work with my teach at Griffith University to study Antarctica's role in global climate.
  • Something that helps us is recording data on the migration of humpback whales while they travel to birth and mate.
  • As they migrate, this direcetly reveals to research levels information about the health of the antarctic sea ice ecosystems where they whales traveled from.
  • The fat reserves of the whale which are used in analyses tell us how successful the whales summer feeding on Antarctic krill was, as well as what Antarctic sea ice conditions were like.
  • Whales energy reserves over time resemble the conditions in the Antarctic in warmer years with lower sea ice concentration. Additionally, the whales being thinner gives us a new way to observe remote sea ice ecosystem, without traveling all the way to the Antarctic.
  • Humpback whales benefit our research because they help us to monitor one of the planet's environments which is most susceptible to change.
  • RESEARCH: HUMPBACK WHALES
  • Do they help monitor our society? YES!!!
